What's usually behind it
Magnetron and high-voltage parts
Runs-but-no-heat is the magnetron circuit: magnetron, capacitor, or diode. These carry lethal stored voltage even unplugged — genuinely not a DIY area.
Waveguide cover and arcing
Sparks usually come from a food-soiled waveguide cover or chipped interior paint — inexpensive fixes when caught early, cavity damage when ignored.
Door switch faults
Microwaves have two or three interlock switches; one failing makes the unit dead or blows the fuse. Quick fix on over-the-range models worth keeping.

Why won't you just repair my countertop microwave?
Because the math doesn't work for you — a diagnostic plus a part costs more than a decent new countertop unit. We'd rather tell you that on the phone than charge you to say it in your kitchen.
It sparked once. Can I keep using it?
Stop using it until it's looked at. If it's the waveguide cover it's a cheap fix — but continued arcing burns the cavity, and that's the end of the unit.
Can I replace the door switch myself?
The switch is easy; the capacitor next to it holds a charge that can hurt you badly even unplugged. This is the one appliance where we genuinely say: don't open it.
