What's usually behind it
Defrost failure
Frost buildup on the evaporator blocks airflow. The freezer works harder and harder until it can't hold temperature. A failed heater or defrost thermostat is the usual culprit.
Door seal and hinge wear
A gasket that's torn or a lid that's dropped out of alignment lets humid air in — that's where the heavy frost and freezer burn come from. Inexpensive fix, big difference.
Start relay or compressor
The click-and-stop pattern on a chest freezer is usually a failed start relay — a cheap part. If the compressor itself has failed on an older unit, we'll give you the honest replace-vs-repair math.
Is it worth fixing?
Freezers are simple machines and repair well. Replace only when the compressor fails on a unit past 12 years.

How long will my food stay frozen while I wait?
A full chest freezer holds safe temperature for roughly 48 hours unopened, an upright about 24. Don't open it, and call us early in the day — freezer-down calls get same-day priority.
My garage freezer stopped working in winter. Why?
Many freezers aren't rated below ~55°F ambient — the thermostat thinks it's cold enough and stops running. Some models take a garage kit; we can tell you on the phone whether yours does.
Is heavy frost something I can fix myself?
A full manual defrost (unplug for 24h, towels down) is worth trying once. If the frost comes back within a couple of weeks, a part in the defrost system has failed and it needs a proper repair.
