What's usually behind it
Jammed flywheel
A bone, a pit, or a stray spoon wedges the plate. The hum is the motor stalling against it. Often freed in minutes with the right tool — and we check the seals while we're under there.
Bottom-leak = internal seal failure
A leak from the bottom housing means the internal seal is gone, and that's not a repairable part on most units. Honest answer: that's a replacement, and we can install one the same visit.
Dead reset or wiring fault
A silent disposal is often the reset button, the wall switch, or the cord — all cheaper than people fear.
Is it worth fixing?
Jams and electrical faults: repair. Bottom leaks: replace — the seal isn't serviceable.

It's humming. Can I try the hex-key trick first?
Yes — with the power OFF at the switch, turn the hex socket under the unit back and forth to free the plate, press reset, try again. If it re-jams or trips again, there's likely damage worth a look.
Water under the sink — is it definitely the disposal?
Not always; drain connections and dishwashers share that cabinet. Dry everything, run water, and watch where the first drip forms. Bottom of the disposal body = replacement. A hose clamp = easy fix.
