LG Washer OE Error — What It Means and How to Fix It

OE on an LG washer means one thing: the machine tried to drain and the water didn't leave fast enough. It is the single most common LG washer code we see in Pittsburgh, and the good news is that most OE codes are maintenance, not failure.
The 15-minute check that clears most OE codes
- Unplug the washer. Put towels down — there will be water.
- Open the small access door at the lower front corner. Behind it: a thin drain hose and a large round cap.
- Drain the small hose into a pan first, then unscrew the round pump filter cap slowly.
- Pull the filter and clean it. Expect coins, hair ties, a sock. This is normal and it's the usual cause.
- Check the main drain hose behind the machine isn't kinked or shoved too deep into the standpipe.
- Reassemble, plug in, run a Rinse+Spin empty.
When it's not the filter
If the filter was clean and OE returns on an empty rinse cycle, you're likely looking at a failing drain pump — they wear around years 6 to 9 — or a blockage deeper in the sump where a bra wire or drawstring has wrapped the impeller. Listen at the lower front during drain: a healthy pump hums steadily; a failing one rattles, buzzes, or is silent.
One more honest possibility: house plumbing. If the standpipe gurgles or the sink nearby backs up, the washer is fine and the drain line is the patient.
When to call a pro
When to call a pro: OE returns after a filter clean, the pump sounds wrong, or there's water on the floor. A drain pump replacement is a routine, mid-range repair — typically $150–$250 all-in, done in one visit since we stock LG pumps on the truck.
